Slnecnica

The Slovak Folk Group Slnecnica – The Sunflower – was formed in November 2011 by a group of enthusiasts with artistic background and experience.

The first public appearance of Slnecnica at the Christmas Concert in December 2011, organized by Slovak Folk and Cultural Centre, was very well received by the community. This event has fueled the interest of the community and, as more individuals have expressed a desire to join the group,  the number of members of Slnecnica has increased. Throughout the years, Slnecnica has performed at the annual concerts organized by SFCC, as well as multicultural events organized by the Calgary Folk Arts Council, and Serbian Festival.

The repertoire of Slnecnica has been created in accordance with traditional old dances from different ethnographic regions of Slovakia, each possessing its own distinctive characteristics and style.  Choreography, emphasizing an authentic representation of customs and traditions, is complemented by colorful costumes.

In September 2014, a group of musicians began to rehearse with the ensemble to provide live accompaniment to the singers and dancers of Slnecnica.

Slnecnica is rehearsing on Sunday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from September to June.

We welcome avid dancers and singers who have a passion for performing Slovak folklore.
